How to Mix & Match

When you enter a room and it just feels good, it is usually because of the balance of textures, patterns, and color. A composition of materials and textiles adds depth, dimension, and visual interest to a room. I believe it is part of the reason why coastal and farmhouse styles became popular and are still often requested. See how easy it can be to mix and match your textures and patterns with these tips.

All rooms need to start with a foundation and that should be established first. The foundation is the base from which you begin. In a living room it could be a sofa or area rug, in a bedroom it could be the bed or the flooring think of it as a visual place for the eye to focus and rest.

Patterns:

Using a mix of patterns that have different scales and proportions is essential. One large scale pattern that can have a combination of supporters. For instance, a large floral leading lady with smaller stripes or chevrons added to the cast of players. The patterns should compliment and not compete with each other while a solid can be used to unify the color palette between patterns. The balance of the ensemble creates harmony. You will know when you have added too many patterns because all of a sudden you will think…OMG…What just happened it was looking so good? Time to take one away.

Texture:

Adding texture to a room can be done endlessly with flooring, ceilings, tile, furniture, window treatments, and decor. Rough sawn beams, smooth porcelain tiles, rattan furniture, soft velvet or leather upholstery, a shag area rug, silk drapery, grasscloth wallpaper, chunky knit pillows, metal sculptures…so many options. When looking into a room, you are drawn in and want to touch what you see. Let your spirit shine by layering textures to create a rich gorgeous environment.

Cohesion:

Contrast and color within the patterns and textures will create the ambience of the room. There should be a balance of all the elements so as to not overwhelm the senses. Use color within the patterns and textures will help to unify the combination of selections you have put together. Remember, to take a step back and leave the room for a while when you think you are finished but aren’t quite sure. Try to avoid the space if you can for a day and then reenter the room with fresh eyes. What needs to be adjusted or changed, will become obvious.

You have just now created a comfortable and elegant space for yourself. Have fun with it and enjoy!
